Subject: Participation In A Research Study
Importance: High

Dear Support Group Leader & Support Group Members:

Hello, my name is Angela Boreing.  I am a graduate student, pursuing a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, at Eastern Kentucky University.  I am conducting a research project titled Measuring the Sense of Humor in Adults Who Stutter and Adults Who Do Not Stutter Using the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale.  The purpose of this study is to determine the degree to which humor is exhibited by adults who stutter (AWS).  A second purpose is to compare humor exhibited by AWS to adults who do not stutter (AWDNS).  The research in this area is limited. While you will not receive any personal or monetary benefit from participation in this study, results of this project may help people who stutter and speech-language pathologist to understand the role of humor in the intervention process. The only cost for you is the time involved in completing the survey.

Will you please help me by taking part in this important study?  I am inviting you to be a part of this study based on your membership in the National Stuttering Association support group in Kentucky and surrounding States.  If you take part in this study, you will be one of about 60 people to do so.  Your involvement in this project is voluntary and anonymous.  That means that no one, not even members of the research team, will know that the information you give came from you.  Your information will be combined with information from other people taking part in the study. When we write up the study to share it with other researchers, we will write about this combined information. You will not be identified in these written materials.  It should take approximately ten minutes to complete the 24-item Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS).

To complete the MSHS please click here.  The web site will open on May 3, 2007 and close on August 30, 2007 so I ask that you please participate as early as possible.  I also ask that only adults who stutter complete the survey.  Completion and submission of the survey indicates your consent to participate in this study.

A summary of the results of this project will be sent to each support group leader who will be asked to forward it on to all members of the group. If you have any questions about this study or your participation in this study, please contact me, the investigator, Angela Boreing at (606) 521-4171 or angela_boreing@eku.edu or the thesis mentor, Dr. Martin Diebold at (859) 622-4442 or martin.diebold@eku.edu.

Sincerely,
Angela Boreing, B.S.
