Definitions and Notes:

  • Internet Discussion Group - also known as an email distribution system, Yahoo group, listserv (brand name), bulletin boards, BBS, or (incorrectly) a "chat room."  Chat is real time using instant message software while an internet discussion group is email based.  Hundreds of thousands of Internet Discussion Groups exist on the internet for any subject imaginable - including some that are NOT imaginable!

  • PWS - Person Who Stutters

  • SLP - Speech Language Pathologist

  • Covert PWS - One who has the ability to pass for fluent much of the time, NOT any stutterer who wants to hide his or her stuttering.

  • Groups containing "NSA" are sponsored directly by the NSA and are limited to NSA members.  All other groups have no official connection to the NSA.

Selecting the right Internet Discussion Group for YOUR needs is more of an art rather than a science.  If you want general support for stuttering and the latest professional advice on how to deal with stuttering, Stutt-L is the right group for you.  If you are an SLP, student or speech professional wanting to learn more about stuttering, Stutt-L or Covert-S is the right group.   If you've recently attended an NSA national conference and want to share your experiences and pictures, NSA-Conference is the right group.  (This group has recently been opened for general support and discussion also.)  If you are a covert stutterer (see the definition above), Covert-S is designed especially for you.  You can join as many of these groups as your tolerance for email will allow.

Pick the right group and get the biggest bang for your buck!  (All of these groups are free by the way.)  Enjoy!
